Photos don’t do the colour justice. The red glows under good light and the black shifts as they move.

Our lines

Bred in colonies. Selected every generation.

Swordtails breed in groups: in each colony several males and females cross freely. Our work is choosing who stays.

The breeder

One fish room, a lot of patience, and a colour I couldn’t stop chasing.

I set up my first tank when I was nine — a ten-gallon with a pair of red swordtails that had fry before I knew what that meant. I have kept livebearers ever since.

A few years ago I saw my first Red Alpha in a European breeder’s photos: velvety black over a red so deep it looked lit from inside. Getting the colour to hold took two years of colonies, culling and notebooks. Today the fish room in Northeast Florida runs three colonies — Red Alpha, Red Ruby and Marble — in fourteen tanks.

“I only list a fish I would keep for myself.”
  • 14 tanks in the fish room
  • Three colonies: Red Alpha, Red Ruby, Marble
  • Selecting every generation since 2023
  • Every fish photographed before it is listed
